Reciting The Quran

Reciting the Quran

Once you are pure and ready to read the Quran, sit somewhere clean and face the Kibla in Mecca. Place the Quran on a Quran stand, on a clean pillow, or a clean, slightly elevated surface.

Recite “A’oozu Billaa hi minash shayta nirra jeem” (”I seek refuge in Allah from the outcast Satan”) and “Bismillah Hir Rahman Nir Raheem” (“In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful”) before starting any recitation and say it again at the start of each Surah.

Recite the Quran with Tajweed. Tajweed means to ‘adorn’ or ‘beautify’. In this context, it refers to specific way you should beautify your recitation of the Quran. Make sure you know how to implement Tajweed properly if you want to implement it in your recitation. (Some sources say Tajweed is not compulsory, whereas others say it is, only if you know how to implement it properly.)

Recite in a loud voice but if you fear you would be insincere or do not want to risk showing off or disturbing others then you should read in a low tone – especially to avoid disturbing others who are praying Salaah.

Avoid talking idly whilst reading the Quran. However, if you have to talk or answer someone’s Salaam, then you can do so and start reciting again with “A’oozu Billah…” and “Bismillah…”.

Do not turn the pages of the Quran with saliva on your fingers.

Whilst reciting, sit up straight and do not lean back.

Rinse your mouth with water if you cough up mucus or phlegm.

Try to supress any yawns when reciting, but if you cannot, pause your recitation.

Do not recite hastily/quickly. Take your time and savour the words of the Quran.

Pause Marks

In the Quran, there are several types of pause marks which have different meanings.

The Sadja Mark

When you come across this mark when reciting the Quran, you must prostrate towards the Kibla:

۩ - This is the sadja mark in The Quran App.

There are only 15 sadja marks in the Quran, they are in the following positions:

(7:206), (13:15), (16:50), (17:109), (19:58), (22:18), (22:77), (25:60), (27:26), (32:15), (38:24), (41:38), (53:62), (84:21), and (96:19).

As mentioned previously, this may not be a complete list, so please make sure to do additional research.
