Handling The Quran

Handling the Quran

Before you even pick up a Quran, you should be in a state of purity. This means you should do wudu (ablution) – the same wudu that you would do before praying.

However, if you have had sexual contact with someone, had complications when giving birth, or you have just come off your period, you must do ghusl (a more extensive form of ablution).

While purifying, you should also clean your mouth so that your breath does not smell and you do not have bits of food stuck in your teeth.

It must be noted that, if you are in a state Janabah (impurity caused by any contact with semen) you CANNOT recite the Quran until you perform ghusl.

Doing wudu is NOT necessary if you are reciting Quran from your phone, tablet, computer, or from your memory.

Once you have purified yourself, you must handle the Quran with care and respect. Do not put other books or things on top of it and do not put it in a pile of books.

Your environment and clothing must be clean (clothes must cover your awrah – men and women have different awrah’s so make sure you know what your own awrah is before reciting).

When reading from the Quran, avoid placing it on the floor, rather rest it on a clean pillow or a slightly elevated place, such as on a Quran stand.

If you are in a state of impurity but you need to move a Quran or put it away, put a barrier between your skin and the Quran, such as a clean piece of clothing.

Do not use the Quran as a pillow.

When you want to put the Quran back, hold it in your right hand and put it somewhere clean and above other books.

As mentioned previously, this may not be a complete list, so please make sure to do additional research.
