Scientific Miracles in The Quran

(The information for the miracles discussed in this section is from ‘The Muslim Vibe’ website.)

The Importance of Water

In verse 30 of Surah Al-Anbiya (Chapter of The Prophets), Allah says, “We made every living thing from water, will they not believe?

This claim was then made by scientists after the creation of microscopes, when they concluded that all living things are mostly made of water – the human body is roughly 60% water. It is also worth mentioning that scientists have said that life on Earth largely depends on water, too.

The Big Bang Theory

Also in verse 30 of Surah Al-Anbiya, Allah states, “Did the unbelievers (who do not accept the teaching of the Prophet) not realize that the heavens and the earth were one solid mass, then We tore them apart?

In the1920’s, Edwin Hubble proposed ‘Hubble’s Law’, which suggested that everything in space is moving away from the Earth at speeds proportional to their distance (meaning that the further away the something is from Earth, the faster they are moving). Soon after this, Hubble discovered that galaxies are moving away from each other as well, not just away from the Earth, suggesting that the universe is expanding.

This is the general principle of the Big Bang theory, which states that the universe expanded from a single extremely hot and dense point around 14 billion years ago and has been expanding ever since. In the 1960’s, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson won the Noble Prize for the discovery that confirmed the Big Bang theory.

When looking at the verse cited above, while acknowledging Allah Knows best, it remains astounding that the Quran had already revealed that “the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, and We separated them”.

The Big Crunch Theory

Also in verse 104 of Surah Al-Anbiya, Allah states, “On that Day We shall roll up the heavens like a scroll for writing. Even as We originated the creation first so We shall repeat it. This is a promise binding on Us; and so We shall do.”

While theorising how the universe will end, scientists have suggested that, once the universe stops expanding, it will begin to collapse back in on itself. This is similar to how Allah states rhat the heavens will be rolled by like 'a scroll for writing.'

Embryos

In chapter 23, Surah Al-Mu’minun (Chapter of The Believers), verses 12 to 14, Allah says, “We created man out of the extract of clay, then We made him into a drop of life-germ, then We placed it in a safe depository, then We made this drop into a clot, then We made the clot into a lump, then We made the lump into bones, then We clothed the bones with flesh, and then We caused it to grow into another creation. Thus, Most Blessed is Allah, the Best of all those that create.

Professor Emeritus Keith L. Moore, one of the world’s most well-known embryologists, said, “It is clear to me that these statements must have come to Muhammad from God, because almost all of this knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later”.

The original Arabic in which these verses are revealed is so perfect and precise that, to fully comprehend the miraculous nature of these verses, a reader of the Quran (and a learner of Islam) should read the Tafsir (an interpretation and explanation of the Quran by scholars) of these verses.

The Protection of The Sky

In Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 32, Allah says, “And We made the sky a secure canopy; and yet they turn away from these Signs.

The sky and atmosphere protect life on Earth in several ways, including protection from the sun’s electromagnetic radiation, protection from the freezing temperatures of space (which are roughly -270°C), and protection from things falling to Earth from space, such as meteorites and falling satellites, which burn up in the atmosphere and vaporise.

Iron in Meteorites

In chapter 57, Surah Al-Hadid (Chapter of Iron), verse 25, Allah says, “… And We sent down iron, wherein there is awesome power and many benefits for people.

It is known that iron does not form naturally on Earth. It is widely accepted and understood that iron came to the Earth within meteorites that hit the planet billions of years ago. It is also well known that iron is strong and has many, many uses in the modern world.

The Barrier of The Sea

In chapter 55, Surah Ar-Rahman (Chapter of The Most Merciful), verses 19 to 20, Allah reveals, “He unleashed the two seas so that they merge together, and yet there is a barrier between them which they may not overstep.

These verses could refer to several places on Earth where different seas meet but have a clear separation, such as the Gulf of Alaska, the meeting point of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, and the Arctic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.

The Orbits of Things in Space

In Surah Al-Anbiya, verse 33, Allah says, “It is He (Allah) Who created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon. Each of them is floating in its orbit.

It wasn’t until around the 20th century that it become common knowledge among astronomers that celestial bodies have orbits in space, whereas the Quran had been revealed with this information more than 1,000 years prior.

Mountains Make the Earth Stable

In chapter 78, Surah An-Naba (Chapter of The News), in verses 6 to 7, Allah states, “Have We not spread the earth like a bed, and fixed the mountains like pegs.”

The geophysicist Frank Press wrote in his book that mountains are like stakes that are buried deep in the Earth, for example, Mount Everest is approximately 9 km above sea level but its ‘root’ goes deeper than 125 km - however, this alone isn't proof of mountains having a 'stabalising' effect on the planet. So, where is the truth in this verse?

In a research paper titled Mountains Gravitation Pegs Stabalize the Earth's Rotation Motion, Saad investiagted the aforementioned verses in the Quran and by the end of his 20 pages of research, Saad concluded that, "Mountains with their roots are like gravitational pegs that stabalize the Earth's rotation motion." So, contrary to what some deniers of Islam may claim, mountains don't necessarily stabalise the planet by reducing and eliminating tectonic acitivity (thereby eliminating earthquakes), the total influence of every mountain on the planet stabalises the rotation of the planet by correcting Earth's antipode anomalies, as stated in the research paper.

In chapter 4, Surah An-Nisa (Chapter of The Women), verse 56, Allah says, “Surely We shall cast those who reject Our signs into the Fire; and as often as their skins are burnt out, We shall give them other skins in exchange that they may fully taste the chastisement. Surely Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

For a long, long time, it was believed pain was thought to be dependant on the brain. This verse refutes this belief by stating that, in order for the rejectors of faith to continue feeling pain in chastisement, they will be given new skin – hence, pain is felt in the skin.

Waves Inside the Ocean

In chapter 24, Surah Al-Noor (Chapter of The Light), verse 40, Allah says, “Or [their deeds are] like the darekess in a deep sea, covered by waves upon waves.

Oceanographers (scientists who study the ocean) have said that there are waves under the oceans (called internal waves), not just on the surface. These internal waves are only detectable with specialised equipment, which were not invented for more than a thousand years after the revelation of the Quran, further prooving that the Quran came from an all-knowing Creator.
